"Let Your Ego Take the Lead"
Updated: Aug 19
It’s a new day, and with it comes another opportunity to choose yourself.
For a long time, I allowed other people’s expectations, opinions, and limitations to influence how I moved through life. I questioned decisions I already knew were right for me. I explained myself when I didn’t need to. I sometimes made myself smaller just to keep other people comfortable.
But I’m learning that there comes a point when you have to step out from underneath all of that.
And that’s where I want to talk about ego.
When I say “let your ego take the lead,” I’m not talking about arrogance, selfishness, or feeling like you’re better than everyone else. I’m talking about your healthy ego the part of you that can help you recognize your needs, consider reality, make intentional choices, and move forward without constantly allowing other people’s expectations to control your decisions.
Sometimes, your healthy ego needs to say:
“I can make a different choice.”
“I don’t have to shrink to make someone else comfortable.”
Give Your Personal Goals a Shot Without Interruption
How many times have you put your own goals on pause because you were worried about what someone else might think? What if you permitted yourself to try before you felt completely ready?
Try anyway.
Your healthy ego can help you recognize that one uncomfortable moment doesn't have to determine your entire future.
Apply for the opportunity.
Start the business.
Set the boundary.
Speak your truth.
Ask for what you’re worth.
Take the chance.
You don't have to know exactly how everything will work out before you take the first step.
Maybe Your Bold Move Looks Like…
Launching the business you’ve been talking about.
Saying no without feeling guilty.
Showing up online instead of hiding your gifts.
Asking for what you know you’re worth.
Applying for the opportunity you don’t feel completely ready for.
Setting the boundary you’ve been afraid to establish.
Choosing yourself without feeling selfish.
Your goals don't have to make sense to everyone else. They need to be meaningful to you.
Stop Letting Other People Write Your Story
One of the most empowering things we can do is recognize that we have a say in our own lives.
We can listen to advice without surrendering our decision-making.
We can care about people without abandoning ourselves.
We can love others without allowing their expectations to become our identity.
And we can grow without needing everyone to understand our growth.
Sometimes the question isn't: “What will they think?”
It’s: “What do I think?” “What do I want?” “What choice aligns with the woman I’m becoming?”
That’s where your healthy ego can take the lead, not by controlling you, but by helping you balance your desires, your values, your emotions, and reality.
You Don’t Need Permission to Become More.
So today, I’m choosing to let my healthy ego take the lead.
Not recklessly.
Not selfishly.
Intentionally.
Because I deserve to discover what is possible when I stop allowing fear, doubt, and other people’s expectations to make all of my decisions.
Journal Coaching Moment
Take a few quiet minutes today and ask yourself:
“What do I want to try that I’ve been too nervous to start?”
Then ask:
“What’s one bold but intentional move I can make today?”
Don’t overthink it. Write honestly.
My Healthy Ego Wants Me to Try:
Now choose one.
Let’s Work Together to thrive in life. You don't have to change your entire life today. You just have to permit yourself to take one intentional step. Because sometimes the person you've been waiting for to believe in you... is you.
Warm regards,
Coach S. Mason
